Hello!

A bit about me:

Hello and welcome! Let me take some time to introduce myself. I’m a passionate journalist and photojournalist with a background in creating stories across audio, video, and written formats. During college, I spent a year covering a wide range of stories for the school paper, Spoke. I produced multimedia news pieces covering local events to crafting opinion pieces and news updates. This role taught me important my time management skills and how to react under pressure. Working in tandem with a team, I participated in weekly pitches, collaborating with peers to generate innovative ideas. This collaborative environment not only fostered my teamwork skills but also enhanced my creative thought process, refining my brainstorming and problem-solving techniques.

With my background Journalism, I bring a unique set of skills to the table, particularly in crafting compelling narratives and maintaining a strong social media presence. I'm well-versed in platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and X, as well as website creation tools such as Wix, Squarespace, and WordPress. My experience writing for my local school paper equipped me with the ability to connect with community members face-to-face and build lasting relationships.

I also had the opportunity to intern with Socialytics, a dynamic startup. I collaborated closely with the owner, contributing to the development of their webpage and spearheading the creation of the site's unique stories. This hands-on experience not only sharpened my technical skills but also instilled in me a deep understanding of the work involved in website development and creation.

Outside journalism, I live an active lifestyle. Over the past two years, I've travelled extensively, maintaining an active presence on social media platforms. This experience has further honed my skills in content creation and community engagement. Because of my love for learning about cultures across the world, I am currently working towards a nutrition certification to expand my presence in the nutrition community. Nutrition is different everywhere you go and food is one of the greatest things to bond over in any country.  I want to help people understand food in a holistic way, combining my love of storytelling with my passion for wellness.

Beyond my academic pursuits, I've had the privilege of apprenticing with a seasoned freelance photographer for the past three years. Under their guidance, I've developed a great understanding of photography, gaining invaluable insights and honing my craft. This hands-on experience has significantly influenced my approach to shooting and editing with a DSLR camera. I'm confident in my skills of creating content if it is asked of me.

Professionally, I’ve also developed strong organizational and client-relations skills in roles beyond journalism. As a deep-clean specialist at Domestic Divas, I handled time management independently, building trust with clients and honing my skills in effective communication. Additionally, my role as a spa concierge at Vintage Hotels required careful scheduling, phone etiquette, and client services that are important for any social job.

If given the opportunity, I'm confident that I can make a valuable contribution to any team. With my passion for creating content combined with a proven track record in social media management and my outgoing energy shows I'm ready to hit the ground running. I thrive both as a collaborative team player and as an independent worker, possessing strong time management, organizational skills and a relentless drive for success. I bring a diverse skill set, a genuine love for people’s stories, and a commitment to every role I take on. Whether it’s through the lens of my camera or helping people reach their wellness goals, I’m here to make an impact. Thank you for considering me for this exciting opportunity.

Sincerely,

Sam Smewing

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

CHRIS ARSENAULT,

PROFESSOR OF JOURNALISM

As a student in Conestoga College’s journalism program, she has worked exceptionally hard, produced excellent stories and photos and been a natural leader in the classroom and beyond. She takes initiative, focuses on creating engaging journalism and has a sharp eye for what makes a good photo.

LYNN HADDRALL,

JOURNALISM PROFESSOR

As one of the top students in the courses I teach, Samantha has distinguished herself with her creativity, strong work ethic, and communication skills. She also meets her deadlines.

GEOFF ROBINS,

PHOTOGRAPHY PROFESSOR

She has a cool demeanor but behind that is an inquisitiveness and intensity, all of which are necessary attributes for success as a wire photographer. Online learning and Covid -19 posed some extra challenges for photojournalism students but Sam continued to produce quality work under less than ideal circumstances.
